S. J. Fraenkel Wien

New old stock Fraenkel (Wien). I am thinking this one is late 60s - 70s. Very nice dark olive that doesn't really come through in the picture. Fraenkel which started back in the 1800s merged with Brüder Böhm Hüte in the late 50s. Brüder Böhm Hüte was one of the 3 Nový Jičín (originally Neutitschein) hat companies along with Hückel and Peschel.

Ebreichsdorfer Heimatmuseum has a permanent Hat making exhibition. S. & J. Fraenkel A.-G. factory was located in Ebreichsdorfer. The following link has a great set of early 20th century photos of the factory (scroll to the bottom and view in full screen mode).

HEIMATMUSEUM EBREICHSDORF (Austria)

Ebreichdorf was the location of S. & J. Fraenkel Wien Hutfabrik.

Here are photos of the museum Hat exhibit. Looks like they have some valuable information on the old Wet Brushed Velour processes at S. & J. Fraenkel Wien. Another place I need to visit.

S. J. Frankel Wien "Sirius 1/2 (Et.) Etui", 57cm, date stamped 01/06/1959. The felt is a dark navy blue with a smooth finish. The overall workmanship is fantastic and I really like the form plus mid ribbon width. Also fits fine even though 57cm and in excellent condition. The color should look better in natural light.

From Gustav Menschel last factory director of S. & J. Fraenkel Wien, Ebreichsdorfer (Austria) Filzhutfabrik. "½ Etui(Et.) Is an indication of Stump weight, about 120grams."

S. & J. Fraenkel Wien, Ebreichsdorfer Filzhutfabrik / Extra Extra Wiener Hutindustrie "Wiener Extra Velour", measures ~ 58cm, possibly early 1930s.  I would like thank Brent on the FL for offering this great pre 1940 Austrian Velour to me.  The thick Metal Gray Velour is really fantastic but I will have to work with it more to get a smoother finish.  The offset bow is a unique feature.  I think it was probably worn brim up as shown because of the over welt.  I only knew this Velour was made by "S. & J. Fraenkel Wien, Ebreichsdorfer Filzhutfabrik" by the paper label.  Exported to the Italian market so it's good know that they used "Wiener Hutindustrie" for future reference.

S. J. Fraenkel Wien, "Arola", 58 cm possibly late 1950s.  This is my first S. J. Fraenkel Wien Homburg Hat find in my size range.  The felt is of a heavier weight but still dry creases and has a soft hand.  The components and workmanship are of excellent quality.  This Homburg Hat was made specially for Thom. Janout Linz Hat Sales K.G..  Back in 2018 I fond a catalog from Thom. Janout, Hat Manufacturer Upper Austria, Linz, Austria (1924) so they stopped producing hats possibly after WWII.

S. J. Fraenkel Wien "Siror", 57cm possibly late 1950s.  I would like to thank Brent on the FL for letting me know about this fantastic Velour.  The high quality golden brown Velour is very closely cropped and has high gloss.  Great looking thin ribbon / band color and bow design.  Also the close cropped Velour allows for the matching Brim Binding.
