Janyška & Cie.

Not a Austrian company but grew out of that tradition. Janyška was started in the 1920s in Valašské Meziříčí – Krásno about 25 km from Nový Jičín. By the way this is the company that produced the early 1940s film on old methods of felt and hat making. Recently received copies of these photos.

Janyška "The BilCal Hat", size 56cm, probably 1930s. This hat is from the Czech find. Fantastic felt and high quality components. What is interesting is BilCal is Bill & Caldwell who were one of the early 20th Century American importers (there weren't many) of foreign hats (including Borsalino).

Tonak "TRIUMF", measures 59.5 cm, probably right after WWII which the model name reflects. There are only small fragments of the paper label remaining. This is definitely a very early Tonak. It has a synthetic sweatband and the felt make up is very unusual. I believe it is made of Wool so the felt might have come from one of the closed companies such as Karl Misik. Janyška & Cie. being a Czech owned company was most likely given priority by the post war Czech government. See the Tonak box above that has the Janyška & Cie. Valašské Meziříčí – Krásno address and not the JHS Nový Jičín address. Janyška & Cie. was the only pre WWII hat company that lasted into the early 1960s. I tend to think they were running the show / pulling strings for a good part post WWII.

I was able to confirm this hat was made by Janyška & Cie. by the following photo I came across that has the same Tonak logo but also Janyška.

Janyška, 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 inches, NOS condition, probably late 1930s early 1940s. The felt is really nice (light weight) and easily dry creases. Also like that it doesn't have a liner which is less common for this style hat. Overall great form! This one is from my May 2016 Czech find.

Janyška "Praga", 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 inches, NOS condition with some mothing, probably late 1930s early 1940s. The felt has more of a Chamois finish in a great blue color (will look better in natural light). Also has an interesting shortened sweatband (also color coordinated) and no liner so wears light. This one is from my May 2016 Czech find. I really like this one!

Janyška "Praga", 58cm, NOS condition but with Mothing, Janyška Hat Holder, probably late 1930s early 1940s. More of a Chamois like finish and with thin Sweatband. This one is from my May 2016 Czech find.

Janyška, 58cm, Crown Open 6 inches, Brim 2 inches, no Liner, NOS condition, probably late 1930s early to mid 1940s. The felt is pliable and takes a dry crease. This is the only one without brim binding and has a different form than the "Praga" models. It's from my May 2016 Czech find.

At the birth of the company were mostly natives of Valasske Mezirici and the surrounding area, the main representative was Ludwig Janyška originally authorized signatory of the company Schlessinger Valasske Mezirici. The company immediately after its foundation quickly developed a promising and already in the 20s of the 20th century has become a strong competitor for companies that in millinery act much longer. Even because the company wanted to continue to develop, in 1928 the company was commissioned to "Janyška a spol., A joint-stock company for production of hats in Valašské Meziříčí".

The period of the joint stock company was the period of the greatest development of the company. Factory managed to export to almost all world markets, not only to America , but also to Asia and Indonesia . Export was the main item for the company and by the mid-1930s the company exported around 85% of the produced goods.

Like the rest of the industry, the factory was hit by the global economic crisis , but due to good leadership, it did not sign up more than the move to lay off several employees and reduce production. Fortunately, the factory stayed in order to grow even further from 1934 . Production and export have been rising rapidly, new and additional workers have been recruited and employees have been able to raise wages. The factory has participated in several world exhibitions and has almost always brought some price. At the end of 1938 , a major reconstruction of the factory was also carried out, when new dining rooms were set up for staff, new showers, dressing rooms and toilets were built.

In 1939 came the German occupation of Czechoslovakia . Although Janska managed to maintain the existence of the company, though at the price of small concessions. The factory was not only producing hats and caps, but also arms production and state orders for the production of military socks. By the end of the war , this production had prevailed.

After World War II, the company worked for a while, but after nationalizing in 1945 , it was then transferred to Tonak together with other Novojičín factories in December 1946 . In 1961 , the race was canceled.

Janyška Velour, 57cm possibly late 1930s early 1940s.  Janyška & Cie. were a Czech owned and established in the 1920s in  Valasske Mezirici, Moravia which is about 25 km from the famous hat and felt production center of Nový Jičín.  This is my first Janyška Velour but unfortunately the model name is not legible on the paper label.  The black Velour felt is of very high quality (dying, finish, hand) and easily dry creases.
