Two step-brothers Rudolf Ferdinand and John Carl Rehfus, who had learned both the merchant craft, built in 1867 in the village of Kehl-hat factory Rehfus.

The hat factory Rehfus'sche could quickly claim due to the excellent quality of their hats on the market. 1895 the company employed about 170 employees. Initially, only hats made of rabbit hair and rabbit hair were made. With the start of the new century, the fashion changed and the Hatter Rehfus'schen rose successfully to the production of lightweight stiff hats (popularly known as melon) around.

Charlie Chaplin made the melon acceptable and gave the models Rehfus'schen »Aerifor," "paradox" and "Zephyr" good sales. Even in South America, Holland, England and Scandinavia was one of melons throat. "Furs are sold in Leipzig, in stiff hats Rehfus in Kehl," read a slogan from England. The racer from the house Rehfus was the "Upper Country", a hat made of waterproof tumbled fur, found mainly in the hunting circles very popular and was made after the First World War as a normal Straßenhut in all colors and shapes.

1890, Carl-Johann Rehfus leads the business in hand. He was ten years ago joined the company as general manager. His second passion next to the company was hunting. The family owned a large area on the small Kronenhof and Carl-Johann was touched as a boy with his friend, the son of the Upper Hunter Fritz, through the extensive coppices. Later he moved into distant climes, to moose hunting or bear hunting by Norway to Russia.

Under the pseudonym of "Upper Countries", he published numerous books that have become classics of hunting literature. His passion was so great that he did sign in 1907 the additional name "Upper Country" at the Karlsruhe Department of Justice.

Carl-Johann Rehfus Oberländer died in 1926. In his footsteps, his son Carl-Hans, who had joined the company in 1908 and how his father was an avid hunter.

However, when it was linked by a major contract with the condition to join the Nazi party, put the hat factory Rehfus the production of these caps without further ado.

After the war, until 1951, the work can be resumed. During the occupation, the factory had been looted and damaged, only months-long cleanup and a credit under the Marshall Plan could start production again. But the fashion changed again and brought an entire industry to stumble - you went (s) now without a hat. In 1963, the Rehfus'sche hat factory closed its doors forever. This beautiful Melone belongs to Manfred (Fritz). I had Manfred check the weight and it is 115 grams. The 70 grams must be for the hat body only. Still amazingly light!

"The Rehfus & Cie ZEPHYR Melone arrived today.

Weight 70g double Ventilated EXTRA EXTRA QUALITY

Outside condition is very good. Inside worn. Size 55,5 cm. A little bit to small."

Rehfus & Cie ZEPHIR Extra Extra Quality, possibly early 1950s but could be older. This pristine beauty belongs to Manfred.

"So here are the photos of the Rehfus Zephyr Melone in Size 55,5. The Condition is outstanding.

The liner looks old but the sweatband is a retailer sweatband and definitely younger. Also the liner is glued not stitched."

The "Incroyable" is a stiff felt hat at 60 or 70 grams (just the hat body) which was super light weight. Manfred has a latter model 70 gram Rehfus & Cie "Zephyr".

Gesetzlich Geschützt (Registered), Reform Doppel (Double) Ventilator, Rehfus & Cie Zephyr 70 Gramm, Extra Extra Qualität, Leichtester (Lightest) Herrenhut (Men's Hat). This appears to be cut from a document from the early 1900s. Rehfus & Cie made very light weight Stiff Felt Hats.

35174387890_ce81b6d996_o.jpg

Manfred actually had a Rehfus & Cie Zephyr 70 Gramm, Extra Extra Qualität Stiff Felt (see link below) and the total weight was 115 grams so the 70 grams was just the weight of the felt. Regardless 115 grams is super light for a Stiff Felt Hat.

Rehfus & Cie. Hat Factory "Olympia", French Point 5 / 57, probably late 1950s very early 1960s. They were located (Kehl am Rhein, Baden) close to France (Strasbourg / Strassburg) so probably why they used French Point sizing. Rehfus & Cie. closed in 1963.

Rehfus Hutfabrikanten / & Cie. "Olympia Extra Quality", Size French Point 5 1/2, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 3/8 inches probably mid to later 1950s. I don't come across many Rehfus hats so was very happy to find this one. The felt is medium weight with a smooth finish and a very smooth hand. Rehfus & Cie / Hutfabrikanten is from the Kehl am Rhein, Germany which is directly across from Strasbourg / Strassburg so probably the reason for using French Point Sizing which is unusual (maybe the only one post WWI) for German Hat Companies.

Rehfus & Cie. "Zephyr" "Extra Extra Qualität", French Point 5 1/2.  The condition is excellent so probably seldom worn. It came with an original shop Hat Case and Hat Brush.  I am thinking post WWII but still uses Rehfus & Cie. and the 1950s Soft Felts used Rehfus Hutfabrikaten. Also the factory was heavily damaged + looted after WWII and didn't go back into production until 1951.

I purchased the following items from a lady (Barbara Rasspe-Dahmann) whose family owned Pelzhaus Josef Seiffert 1863 Solingen ,Germany (see link below).  Josef Seiffert was her Great Grandfather.  The store closed in 2017.  The items are from the 1950s and later.

Rehfus & Cie. Kehl - Rhein "Paradox", FP 5, possibly late 1930s.   I really like the form of this Stiff Felt and it's in great condition.  Dense black Felt with a very nice smooth finish.  According to the the seller this Stiff Felt belonged to her husband's grandfather (Mr. Köhler) who was traveling classical musician that was born in 1882.  The Stiff Felt was stored away in his travel chest (see photos below).

Rehfus & Cie. Kehl - Rhein "Zephyr", possibly 1930s.  I was looking through photos that I took at the  the Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) Hat Museum, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany back in 2016 and I noticed the paper label of this Stiff Felt was from Rehfus and Cie. Khel - Rhein.
