This one is by Gottfried Kiniger of Sillian, Austria (near the Italian Alpine boarder). He makes he is own felt (see video clip above) so a bit out of the ordinary. I visited his shop on a recent trip through Austria and I picked up this natural velour hat. It has some Seal Velour qualities and came with as nice open crown block. The sweat, ribbon and liner quality aren't the best but they are functional. My guess is Gottfried and his wife are over 80 years old.

Awesome Steve! Did you take some more pictures?

What else did you see in Europe?

I went to Switzerland and Austria. I visted Geneva, Bern and Zurich in Switzerland. I went to Innsbruck and took the train through the Italian Alps to Sillian which was awesome. I also visited a town named Lienz where I picked up this new old stock Alpen long hair. Had a super time!

Does anyone have a furfelt hat made by Gottfried Kiniger that they'd be willing to sell? Im doing a major global study of hatmakers that make their own felt by hand in the traditional way and would very much like  an example of his work as part of my research.

I have a hat made by him and his wife (see above) but I don't believe he made the felt for this hat.  I should have purchased one of the hats made from his felt.  Recently I tried to find out if he is still living but I didn't hear anything back from Sillian.  Do you know his latest status?

I heard the following from General Administration of the Market Community of Sillian.

"Mr. Kiniger's workshop, as well as the entire property, can still be found 11 years ago when you visited him!

Nothing has been changed. As far as I know, nothing has been sold yet.

The house and workshop now belong to his son Gottfried!"
