I found some interesting information. Turns out that the Hückel family married into the Habig family and vice versa.

Marriage of Karl Habig (son of Karl Habig) to Berta Hückel (daughter of Johann Hückel) in 1902.

This 1917 death notice for Johann Hückel has their names listed. There is also Frieda Hückel Habig wife of Karl Habig and mother of Karl Habig II.

P. & C. Habig, Hat Maker Since 1862, Wien, The Old House, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,  early 1900s.  This Holiday card took nearly 100 years to arrive  at my house but still in time for New Years.   :)

P. & C. Habig Wien, 58cm probably 1969. This one belongs to John / Moehawk on the FL. His comments:

"The crown is 5" open, the brim 2". The felt is substantial, at 145g total weight, but dense not thick. Finish is very nice. Condition is amazing, the only negative was a slightly dry sweatband that a bit of Lexol took care of. Overall quality is everything I had hoped for, meaning excellent.
The seller thought it was 50's, mayserwegener thought maybe a bit later. I will guess late 60's, wondering if the number 69 at the bottom of the paper tag is the year of production. I have a pretty good idea that if I'm wrong there is someone here that can give me a better number!
I might call this one The Blue 'Burg of Happiness."

I'll post these in the Homburg Nation thread as well."

Lodenfrey München - P. & C. Habig Wien, size 58cm probably from 1959.  This appears to be a store model made by P. & C. Habig Wien.  The paper label has the P. &  C. Habig Wien name removed from the left side of paper label.  This fantatics hat belong to Stefan (steur) on the FL.  Lodenfrey München is still in business today.

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special Qualität" - Made Expressly for Eduard Pelger The Hague, missing paper label, measures 56cm, possibly early 1950s maybe earlier.  This great hat belongs to Stefan (seur) on the FL and here are his comments.

"P&C Habig homburg in brown. This one was part of a set of three with another Habig homburg in black (didn't buy that one) and the GB Borsalino fu Lazzaro homburg (posted earlier). According to the vendor part of the same auction. Makes sense. The black one was from 1952 and the GB Borsalino is from 1935. My guess is that this one is in between (it's lost its label); forties to early fifties.

Size 56, brim at 6cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. Unlined with a cloth crown patch. This is the "before" shoot. Most of the stains on the ribbon came out. Made expressly for Eduard Pelger, The Hague, which is still in business today. Fits me like a custom."

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special", P. & C. Habig's "Special Qualität" Reine Handarbeit Berlin Friedrichstr. 82a, 58cm possibly 1930s. This hat was made specially for the P. & C. Habig Berlin store at Friedrichstrasse 82 which didn't survive WWII. Everything (felt, sweatband, liner, ribbon, workmanship) about this hat is of the highest quality and in excellent condition. The sweatband is very similar to some P. & C. Habig Wien Silk Top Hats of the same time period. The medium weight black felt has a very soft hand and easily dry creases. It also came with the original P. & C. Habig "Hutmacher" Wien Hat Box.

P. & C. Habig Wien Hausmarke "Special Qualität Handerbeit", 58 cm, production year 1957 (based on paper label).  The felt is heavy in weight but still easily hand creases.  The sweatband is really fantastic with a elaborate P. & C. Habig Wien stamping.  As usually the overall quality and form are of the highest order.  This hat was made for the famous A. Breiter München hat store (still in business today).

P. & C. Habig Wien "Grand Prix Paris", 57 cm, 110 grams, late 1890s - 1900. The Felt is very thin and light weight with a great smooth finish.  The black liner with gold embossing is striking.  The textured sweatband is also very light weight with the "Patent Ventilator" holes.  There was a newspaper (from September 4, 1903) spacer behind the rear of the sweatband. I am thinking this was made for the Paris 1900 World Exposition or was made the year after P. & C. Habig Wien winning the "Grand Prix" at the Paris 1900 World Exposition.  I was told by the seller that this Melone belonged to a banker from Greiz which is just south of Graz where the Melone was sold (Carl Singewald).  This is one of my best Stiff Felt finds.

KNIZE "Wien - Bad Gastein, New York - Paris" made by P. & C. Habig Wien, 57 cm possibly early 1960s.  This hats was made P. & C. Habig Wien for the famous Wien Men's Bespoke Clothing Store KNIZE "Wien - Bad Gastein, New York - Paris".  It's a sporty thin ribbon model with a Rauh Felt Finish with a mix of black and grays.  The Felt easily dry creases and is in very good condition.  Also has the P. & C. Habig Wien patented ventilation system called "Ventilo".

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special Qualität, 58 cm, 124 grams, possibly mid 1930s.   It's difficult to find old P. & C. Habig Wien Stiff Felts in normal sizes and this is a great one.  As expected from P. & C. Habig Wien everything (Felt, Components, Construction) is top of top quality.  Made for R. Hecht "Theater Passage, Leipzig". Also the fit is perfect so no tweaking needed.  There is a "Auto Cape" mark but there is no "Auto Cape" present.  My guess is the felt insert was removed.

Seidels Reklame, "Habig Wien / Vienna, Das historische Fenster der Hutfirma / The Historical Window of the Hat Company P.& C. Habig", Issue 3 1925. Österreichische Nationalbibliothek

52026552215_78af748da8_h.jpg

"Once the Habig Collection"

A real shop window, as it used to be, showed the Habig Hat Factory. The most elegant and distinguished hats from Top Hats to Tricorn Hats decorated with ostrich feathers were on display here. The background mockup looked particularly striking. Through a window you could see passers-by in the streets, the gentlemen with infinitely high hats, the ladies with “elegant”, tightly worked lap waists standing wonderingly in front of the displays. Two small, colorful moderator lamps, which were used at the time to illuminate the shop windows, competed in their modest way with the electric light. The motifs for the shop window design of the Max Kühl company were taken from the workshop.

After we already reported in the 4th issue of our magazine about the equipment of the advertising spaces for tourism, this time we are showing pictures of some exhibition halls, which
specially equipped for special tasks. Some of them are kept very simple and are only effective through the generous distribution of colors.

The furnishing of all the booths in the shopping street were designed by E. Wörle.

It would be a pointless beginning to give an overview of the works of art on display in addition to everything else on the few pages available to us, or even to want to highlight the so-called "most representative" works with three or four illustrations. We shall report on the arts and crafts another time and have fundamental things to say. When the Austrian architects arrived in London, Docland Hall, the Exhibition Grounds, was a mess of boards, scrap and
semi-finished floors. Despite the difficulties, it was possible to complete the exhibition in 14 days with all energy exerted.

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special Qualität", 58 cm, 147 grams, possibly early to mid 1920s.  This is an older one based on the Paper Label type and the use of city name Cassel vs. Kassel.  In 1926 the city name was officially changed to Kassel.**  The Black Felt has a superb finish / hand.  The Form is impressive with a taller Crown and less side tapper.  The component quality and workmanship are excellent which is always the case with P. & C. Habig Wien.  The overall condition is very good especially for its age.

The Worker's "Arb." surname appears to be "Makovsky".  I will have to see if I can find something about him.

Starting in 1925 there is an Anton Makovsky listed as "Hutmacher / Hat Maker, XVI/1 Koppstr. 64" in "Adolph Lehmann's general housing indicator: along with trade and business address book for d. k.k. Imperial capital and royal seat of Vienna and surroundings. 1925".

Here is the location today (center building).

P. & C. Habig Wien Berlin "Special - Qualität Reine Handarbeit / Special Qualität"  , 60 cm, 133 grams, possibly 1920s.  This one is really fantastic and in near mint condition.  It came with a P. & C. Habig Wien Paper Hat Holder. The seller said both belonged to his grandfather so it probably came with the Stiff Felt.

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special", P. & C. Habig's "Special Qualität, Reine Handarbeit", 58 cm, possibly 1930s late 1920s and reworked later.  There is no paper label but the Liner is stitched in so if reworked it was possibly in the 1950s.  The Felt has a Natural finish but a soft hand.  The Sweatband, Liner and Band are of very high quality.

This is my late Austrian Opas hat. If I understand the label correctly this was a 1966 hat. The sweat band has mostly parted from the hat and I’d like to have it repaired. I live in the U.K. any advice would be welcome. Also is it a felt hat?

Hello Anita,  Sorry for the late reply.  Great looking P. & C. Habig Wien Soft Felt Hat!  A seamstress should be able to reinstall the Reeded Sweatband. Just copy the stitching that remains. You might be able to do it yourself if you have a sewing background.

Sorry for my very late reply.  Some how I missed your post.  This is a Silk Plush Top Hat.  It was sold by J. A. Seidl, Munich.  My guess is it 1890s into the early 1900s.  Can you check for a paper label behind the sweatband?

P. & C. Habig Wien Berlin "Spezial Biber / Beaver" "Echt Biber / Real Beaver" Stiff Felts in detail before.  This would be at the highest price point because of the Biber / Beaver Felt and possibly made specially for the P. & C. Habig Berlin store at Friedrichstrasse 82 which didn't survive WWII.  P. & C. Habig Wien were known for lighter weight Stiff Felts. I have never seen this color Paper Label (probably due to it being a Biber / Beaver Felt)  before so a first.   The Liner Crest has the K. K. (Imperial - Royal) Hof-Hut Fabrikant. so could be from WWI era or it was still used for a time period post WWI.  This fantastic Stiff Felt belongs to Randy on the FL.
