C. W. Borchert, Berlin W., Marke Borchert

Recommended Posts

Borchert Berlin W., size 59cm, back of sweatband stamped August 6, 1952. Could have been made by Rehfus & Cie. (Kehl a. Rhein) after factory reopened in 1951. Also the Borchert Berlin W. store location changed after WWII because the original location was in the Soviet sector.

The following was found by Celia on the FL.

On the website of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin, you can check out old telephone directories. The one for 1941 does indeed list C.W. Borchert: http://digital.zlb.de/viewer/image/15849340_1941/368/#topDocAnchor

According to this old receipt from 1898, the firm was founded in 1838:

You can see one of their top hats with original hatbox on the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek website (or at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in Berlin):

I couldn't find any information about the firm after 1941 straight away (chances are the factory didn't survive the war). They are no longer listed in the 1951 phone book, but a shop (not factory) turns up called Borchert-hüte with an address on the Kurfürstendamm. I think you actually have one of their hats. I wonder if there's any relation to C.W. Borchert.

C. W. Borchert Berlin W., 58cm, 145 grams possibly late 1920s early 1930s. This Stiff Felt is from the same seller + original owner of the P. & C. Habig Wien "Special", P. & C. Habig's "Special Qualität" Reine Handarbeit Berlin Friedrichstr. 82a Soft Felt. I know Rehfus & Cie. Kehl a. Rhein was a supplier for C. W. Borchert Berlin W so could have been made by them. It has some C. G. Wilke characteristics so they could also be a possible source. The overall quality is very high and it wears comfortably.

According to this 1913 ad Rehfus & Cie (Kehl a. Rhein) made hats under the Borchert Marke.

Borchert Berlin W. "Federleicht/Feather Light" possibly very early 1960s.  The felt is light in weight with a very soft hand.  This form and ribbon / bow work was popular in the late 1950s into the early 1960s.  Based on the paper label format Borchert Berlin W. sourced this hat from Mayser.

Borchert Berlin W., 58 cm, Date Stamped 1. Dez. 1951.  The Smooth Finish Black Felt easily dry creases and has fine hand.  Great Form with mid width Band, Brim Binding plus Wind Cord. In my opinion  the Borchert Berlin W. logo is definitely a standout.  There is no other company mark but I certain the hat was sourced by Borchert Berlin W..  I have two other Borchert Berlin W. Soft Felts from the same time period and appear to be made by the same source.

C. W. Borchert Hat Box, early 1900s.  This belongs to Steve on the FL. "It has the company's original address at Friedrich Strasse pre WWII. After WWII, Borchert moved to Kurfüstendamm. The G.m.b.H initials (the German equivalent of a limited liability company) are also missing on this hat box, which lead me to believe this is very early 1900s."
